Only the DA can ensure that swimming pools stay open

The Democratic Alliance is concerned over the lack of policy or position regarding the opening of public swimming pools in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).

This was made evident in the MMC for Community Services, Cllr Dorah Mlambo’s, response to questions for written reply regarding reasons for the closing of the Metro’s swimming pools between Christmas and New Year’s Day last year.

Contrary to what she told the public, in December last year, the MMC vaguely referred to a resolution taken by Council in September 2006 as the reason for the closure, and not her original reason that lifeguards had requested leave over the mentioned festive period.

According to the MMC, opening swimming pools at a time when they are most needed is not considered to be an essential service for residents.

The DA in Ekurhuleni deems the opening of swimming pools over this period as important to residents, as it is during this period when they will be most enjoyed. In this regard we are the only Party that has a turnaround strategy for the City’s public pools.

A cornerstone to the DA’s turnaround strategy will not only be to ensure that swimming pools remain open, but that security around these pools is available and intensified during the festive season.

During the month of February, the DA will be presenting their turnaround strategy to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Oversight Committee Meeting. Thereafter we will make our strategy public for the benefit of Ekurhuleni’s residents.
