DA calls on Mayor Masina to act swiftly in supporting Highlands Park
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has noted with concern reports of Highlands Park soccer club not being happy with their home ground, Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.
In a news report published on Sowetan LIVE, the club’s Director and Shareholder, Sinky Mnisi, has aired his dissatisfaction about the lack of support from the ANC-led Coalition government in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
The DA considers it unacceptable that Executive Mayor Mzwandile Masina has failed to meet with the Club’s directors in offering them support as the only Ekurhuleni based team playing in the PSL. Furthermore, the city has not congratulated the club for making it to the PSL at the beginning of the 2018/19 season.
If it was not for a submission by the DA to the Speaker’s office, Highlands Park would have never been congratulated for qualifying to play in the Top 8 competition at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.
Following a conversation with the Divisional Head for Sport in Ekurhuleni, the DA understands that the Department is willing to engage in further discussions to find out how the City can better support the club.
From the meeting which I have had with the Divisional Head, it is clear that Ekurhuleni lacks the political leadership in supporting the key role that sport plays within our communities. When the participation of Highlands Park in the PSL offers an opportunity to the City, the ANC and its coalition partners continue to be unsupportive of progress.
As a first step towards addressing the issues faced by Highlands Park, the DA will be submitting a motion in Council, asking the Mayor to act swiftly in ensuring that the club is well catered supported by the City Ekurhuleni.
Under a DA-led government, sport development will be high on the agenda. Furthermore, the DA will be at the forefront of supporting major sporting events as a way of promoting tourism through sport.
